How I use Twitter

admin | Twitter Musings | Monday, December 15th, 2008

If you’re reading this, it’s either because you’ve just started following me on Twitter, or you’re thinking of following me on Twitter.

I want to tell you how I use Twitter.

I’m not saying it’s the best way or even that it’s the right way, but it’s the way that I use it and will continue to.

Firstly be aware, I tweet a lot. A LOT. If you don’t follow many people, then it could seem at times that I’m the only one tweeting. And it could get annoying.

So what do I tweet about?

- I tweet SEO tips
- I tweet links to SEO Tips on 299 Steps to Website Heaven
- I tweet links to tips and reviews on Business on Twitter
- I tweet links to new articles as I publish them on my website
- I tweet links that may be of interest - usually things about Twitter, the internet in general, SEO or IT news
- I retweet things that others have tweeted that I think my followers may be interested in
- I tweet random things that are happening to me
- I moan about bad service - usually from Orange.fr!
- I tweet about new clients I have gained
- I occasionally tweet links to articles my clients have written
- I sometimes tweet links to blogs I post on Ecademy or UK Business Labs
- I sometimes tweet links to other people’s blogs on Ecademy or UK Business Labs
- I ask questions, and sometimes retweet the answers I’m given
- I sometimes tweet random thoughts - just because I can

All in all that can add up to a lot of tweets!

But there’s more…

I’m a great believer in Twitter being, like any other social media, a two way street.

So I reply to other people’s tweets, I answer people that reply to me and hold mini conversations on there.

In general, if you don’t follow lots of the same people as I do, this won’t affect you.

However, if you follow a lot of the same people that I do, you’ll see every @ (reply) message that I send to them, and that they send to me.

And if you’re accessing through the website rather than using a client such as Tweetdeck, then it could get a bit annoying. You do get used to it after a while though, I promise!

So that’s how I use Twitter, and what you can expect if you follow me.

Hopefully it hasn’t put you off, and you’ll be sending me a “Hello” message @NikkiPilkington very soon!
