Twitter is opening up new ways to quickly communicate with the world.

Whenever you send a public messages it can be seen by millions around the globe , and of course by your intended audience.

Your tweet can be found on Google and will stay there as a permanent record of what you tweeted. It also appears on web pages designed to collate tweets.

It started as a simple status message .. ‘What are you doing’ ?

As one of the partners in Tweetake, we love to see people promoting our service – but I have to say that the cartoon accompanying a post I found today really made me smile:

If you use Twitter for business, then it could be important to you to be able to backup your followers if, for whatever reason, they were lost.

I know I wouldn’t like to fall off the edge of the Twitterverse and have the people following me wondering where I had got to.

Play it safe – back up at Tweetake :)

My friend Nikki Pilkington, the UK’s leading SEO expert, created her 299 Steps to Website Heaven for those of us who would like to learn and do more about SEOing, but don’t want to become full time SEO experts. I find the guide an excellent piece of work, and she asked me for a copy of a piece on how I use Google Reader and Twitter as a supplement to 299 Steps. Happy to do so, I thought I would take this back a bit further as to why I think Google Reader and Twitter are so effective for the business person….

Although Twitter sends your DMs to you via email, : messages can sometimes get missed as they’re not sent to you. Tweet Replies allows you to have your @ messages sent to your email, RSS feed or browser.
It says it doesn’t need your password to work, which is more than a little worrying – does this mean that ANYONE can get your @ replies via this site? We’d welcome some comment from Tweet Replies themselves

Interesting to see the increase in followers that @jkrums got yesterday. He was allegedly the first to post pictures of yesterday’s Hudson River plane crash, and a massive 1949 of you decided to follow him – followed by another 132 today at the time of writing.

Stats from the fantastic TwitterCounter.

Update: Rory Cellan-Jones has posted more about this story, and how twitter is changing the way journalists report here.

“Why don’t you follow as many people as follow you Nikki?”

“I’m following you, why aren’t you following me, Nikki?”

“I stopped following you because you’re not following me Nikki”

Just 3 of the messages I’ve received recently talking about who I do and don’t follow on Twitter.

You may have already read my post ‘How I use Twitter’, and this is in a similar vein, but here are my thoughts on following and followers.

Great post from webcommunityforum with more ideas on promoting your business on Twitter. Granted, a lot of these have been covered elsewhere, but I’m a great believer in old info packaged in new ways can give new ideas.

Here are the first 5 on the webcommunityforum list – you can read the rest here –>

# Craft an appropriate Twitter Policy, and encourage your employees to sign up for accounts on Twitter.
# As the owner of your business, register your @companyname and use it for all your tweets.
# Use Twitter Search to find and respond to tweets about your products or your brand.
# Ask for feedback on your products and then follow up with the responses you get.
# Go to any nearby tweetups you can find.
