OK, the title is a little misleading, because this article on NetImperative defines ‘doing it well’ as ‘having the most followers’ which we all know isn’t necessarily the case, don’t we?
However, it’s still interesting to see which UK superbrands have bothered to give Twitter a go, and by measuring their level of followers, we can guess at how much of a ‘go’ they’ve ‘given’.
Some surprises for me – mainly that there are so few – with Twitter being pretty mainstream now and every Internet Marketing Company becoming a Social Media Marketing Company too, I’m surprised that more of the big boys aren’t embracing Twitter, even if it is just outsourced to an agency.
With Twitter costing nothing to set up, and just man hours / time to run, I would have imagine that most big brands could either find someone in the Marketing department to run the account (even if it’s as an experiment), or pay their agency to put ina few hours a week to see if it will work.
But hey, what do I know?
The table is below – I’d be interested to now your thoughts, but I definitely think that some of these brands need a TweetMentor

Personally I think Thomas Cook are missing a massive opportunity to get people signing up for last minute holiday offers, bargains and late bookings, as well as generally keeping ‘in with the geek crowd’.
The RAC could run various Twitter streams offering area focused traffic tweets, warnings of roadworks, as well as special offers on their insurance, and even a special ‘members only’ Twitter account with enhanced offers and features.
The National Lottery – apart from the obvious sending out of winning numbers, reminders of jackpots, launch of new scratchcards, links to stories on the lottery website.
Most of this could be automated and wouldn’t take much time to run.
If any of the above brands need a hand with their Twitter branding and strategy, they can give me a call, my number is 0844 980 0404

At a very small eco company, i think that @moreeco is doing pretty withl with nearly 1500 followers.
Am I a super brand or an Eco Super Brand.
I have more followers on Twitter than those on the above list up to British Airways. However, I will not read too much into that. Rgds Vince
