What’s the difference between Social Media Marketing and Traditional Marketing?

A great post today from Microgeist on the differences between Social Media marketing and more traditional marketing.

Pop over and read the full article, but here’s a quick list of the differences:

  • 1 way vs 2 way conversations
  • Real, or near real, time response
  • Authenticity in consumer data
  • A spectrum of relationships
  • Interactive media
  • Self produced media
  • A focus on content
  • Equalisation amongst authorities
  • A nearer proximity to authority
  • The ability to establish real trust
  • Constant adaptation and growth
  • Diverse distribution channels
  • Low cost
  • Low barrier to entry, high barrier to success
  • Tons of gaps
  • Smaller competitors have many advantages
  • The emergence of the passionate supplier

I have to say, it always amazes me that more of the ‘big names’ aren’t getting involved in Social Media Marketing, and instead are sticking with the tried and tested ‘traditional route to market’. With most Social Media Marketing being well within their budget, what harm could it do to give it a go?

But I suppose that leaves the path clear for the smaller and medium sized enterprise to make the most of low cost and free (not counting your time, which of course has a value) opportunities while the ‘big boys’ are playing elsewhere…
