Find a flat using Twitter?

We love hearing about weird and wonderful ways to use Twitter, so when Steven, the owner of Roostr, dropped us a line asking us to look at his site, we were on it in a second!

They say:

What is Roostr?

Roostr helps you to find or let flats. By tapping into the speed and convenience of Twitter, Roostr makes searching for a new flat or flatshare quick and easy.

Tweet your flat on Twitter. It’s easy!

Roostr allows you to tweet your flat or flatshare on Twitter in a way that maximises the chances of potential flatmates finding you. Our service is free and easy to use. Just sign in with Twitter, and Roostr will help you create your Tweet and post it directly to your Twitter account.

Find a flat on Twitter

There’s no faster way to find your perfect flatshare or flat in the UK. Using Roostr’s innovative search you are able to find a flat on Twitter in real time and communicate directly with potential flatmates before taking the next step.

We say:

OK, it’s not going to replace other ways of finding or renting a flat, but it’s another ‘route to market’ and might just work – if you have a Roostr success story, let us know below!

As I understand it, Roostr only allows you to tweet from your own account – so why not just do exactly that? Either I am missing something pretty fundamental, or there is no point to the website!

  2. admin says:

Nick, I haven’t checked it out properly, mainly as I don’t have a flat to rent! I’ll ask them to pop in and answer your comment :)

  3. Steven says:

You are correct Nick there is nothing to stop the regurlar twitter user from tweeting about their flat. However if everyone uses their own language in tweets to do so there is no way to bring all the tweets [about flats from london] into one place and allow people to search through them. Roostr tries to bring uniformity to flat hunting related tweets as well as provide ranged searching for price and bedrooms.

With the volume of tweets that get published to Twitter if a user tweets about their flat they are going to drop off any search result within hours even minutes. Roostr allows you to republish tweets as often as you wish. If you want to use Twitter search to find Roostr listed tweets simply perform a search for “source:Roostr flat TW8″ as an example.

Since Roostr allows both people searching for a flat and those with vacant rooms/flat to tweet, it is able to match up potentially compatible twitter users. It uses Twitters Direct Message functionality to message both party about the potential match.

You have highlighted a good point though. I will look at creating a detailed FAQ and Help section on the site which should hopefully clarify the benefits and purpose of Roostr.

    Thanks
    -Steven

I did look at Roostr a few months ago but dismissed it for the reason above. The best way to understand how something works is to give it a try – so I’ll do that!

    And report back of course!

  5. Nick says:

It didn’t work – I’ll try again with one of our bargain Bedsits http://www.pimlico-flats.co.uk/Rent-London-Flats-71-1.html. These properties are so sought after (because it is so rare to find this type of property in Central London) that we rarely need to advertise them at all – we have let the last 6 without any advertising and this vacancy doesn’t feature on our website. Announcing this ought to guarantee enquiries if Roostr works.

  6. Steven says:

Roostr has been going for 2 months, we are currently trying to get as many people aware of the site as possible through blogs similar to this one. As I am sure you are aware (having your own site Nick) these things take time, we don’t expect to be Gumtree overnight. We thank all the early adopters of the site but would urge them to remain patient. As more and more people turn to Twitter to help with flat hunting and finding flat mates then Roostr will prove very useful.

    Thanks

  7. Nick says:

Sorry to be so harsh Steven. If you’d like some kinder feedback – your website gets 10/10 for techie wizardry and ease of use. If you fail it will be because of twitter, not your implimentation.

  8. Steven says:

All your feedback is appreciated Nick. You’re right we are heavily dependent on Twitter continuing its rapid growth. We are looking at different options to get more people (estate agents on twitter) involved and using Roostr to make the service more useful for everyone.

    Thanks
