The London Riots and Twitter

This has been the end of an extraordinary and horrifying week. The rioting in London which then spread all over the UK has shocked and frightened the general public and has caused a huge amount of damage to homes and businesses and tragically, the deaths of several people. While we all struggle to come to terms with what’s happened, some important questions have been asked about the role of Twitter and other social media in the riots: did people plan riots or incite them on Twitter? Should the social media accounts of these people be blocked and/or monitored? I personally came across one or two tweets that seemed to me to show a flippant attitude towards the rioting and I did find that disturbing. However, most tweets are on public record and if people were actually involved in planning or inciting riots through Twitter, it will surely be a lot easier to track them down than it would be otherwise.

How I use Twitter by Patricia of Ruddyglow Park Country House

How long have you been on Twitter?
About a month…

How many people follow you?
74 – and growing every day.

How many people do you follow?
128

What made you sign up to Twitter?
Wanted to see what all the noise was about! But also to see if it would be interesting for my guests, to see if it could be used to benefit the business and or our local community.

How often do you ‘Tweet’?
Every day and as and when I have something that I think might be of interest to the people that follow me. Mainly about things happening in the Scottish Highlands with a smattering of other info.

Twitter, injunctions and the fine art of misdirection

So, by now, we all know the name of the footballer who allegedly had an affair with a model. Right? Proof positive that injunctions are now useless, the story is now in the public domain and that Twitter rules. Hurray, it’s the dawn of a new era!

Except it’s not quite that simple. Yes, the papers now feel confident in printing that he took out an injunction against the story being published, but they still can’t print the story they want to – otherwise The Sun would have a lot more to say than “It’s Ryan Giggs” today.

Automating Twitter: Beware of the Dangers – A guest post by Paul Green

Being a bit of a geek, I thought it would be great to use technology to help generate tweets to my followers. So, having checked out the likes of SocialOomph and Futuretweets – I thought great, this is right up my street to manage a 3 month campaign to automate various tweets on articles, case studies, newsletters, blogs and various other business related links. (Hmm – note to self, it’s sounding ‘spammy’ as I’m writing this).

So being fairly new to the use of social media for business, here’s me thinking I would become a trending phenomenon over night. Err…unfortunately not the case.

My top five Twitter tools for automating, updating and managing Tweets in the office or on the move

Woo hoo! When I had nearly finished my book, “French Nouns: Masculine or Feminine?” I was really pleased with myself. However, it slowly dawned on me that writing the book was all very well, but how was I going to tell people about it? No website, no skills to design one and no money to pay someone else to do it….

How should I mix the personal and professional on Twitter?

I regularly give talks for entrepreneurial businesses on how to make their marketing pay. Top of my list for most is to try social media as part of their marketing toolkit. And within that, I almost always recommend Twitter. Particularly if the business in question is one where authentic one-to-one relationships count.

IS TWITTER A WHOLE LOT OF TWOSH? – A guest post by Ida Horner

I certainly don’t think so but I’ve listened my way into several conversations of folk that think it is. Those conversations tend to go like this

“What is the point of twitter, why would I want to know what someone had for breakfast/lunch, I don’t get it and it must be for sad people with nothing better to do”

I am often tempted to interject and “educate” such folk about the joys of twitter but have resisted the urge thus far.

So why do I disagree with the naysayers?

I'm happy to use Increase Sociability.
