The anatomy of a Tweet – what do all those symbols mean?

A guest post by @laura_champion

So, you’ve been told that Twitter is a great way of marketing your small business on an even smaller budget… but when you log on it all looks like gibberish. As a relative newbie to Twitter myself, I thought I’d jot down what I’ve learnt so far to help you make the most of this powerful communications channel.

Twitter is a Social Media website, where you ‘follow’ people in order to see their Tweets. You see the Tweets of all the people you follow in a chronological stream, and they will see yours if they follow you. The tricky thing is that a Tweet is restricted to just 140 characters, so a kind of short hand has emerged that helps people to communicate rather a lot, in this very small space.

Useful and Fun Twitter Bots!

A guest post by @annsmarty

Twitter bots are non-human Twitter users (I know it sounds like non-fiction!) that perform some automated action. While there are tons of spammy Twitter accounts (actually, almost one-third of Twitter users are not “real” people or zombies), there are a few really cool and useful ones!

Basically, all Twitter bots can be divided into two large groups:

  • Auto-streaming bots (those that automatically post public Twitter updates based on some criteria. A good example is an RT Twitter bot that collects and streamlines Tweets based on a hashtag or a search term);

Why I love Twitter by a self confessed Twitterholic

I suspect I was asked to write this guest blog because I am a self confessed Twitterholic!  I do spend a lot of time on Twitter, and by the time you read this will probably have surpassed the 30,000 tweet mark, yet I have only been on Twitter for about 18 months.

I come across a lot of people who don’t understand Twitter, and especially don’t realise what it can do for your business.

@jewellerygenie – How Twitter has worked for me

I asked people to let me know whether they had managed to get ‘real life’ business from twitter and was inundated with emails – here, @jewellerygenie tells us about her experience of gaining business from Twitter.

  • Your Twitter name – @jewellerygenie
  • Your company name and www – The Jewellery Genie www.jewellerygenie.com
  • Your company type – jewellery designer – I specialise in making jewellery from unusual items (dominos, bits of coffee machine, etc) and/or recycled, broken, unwanted jewellery (my ‘reloved’ range for which I donate a percentage to charity).

Is twitter turning us into a nation of whingers?

To me twitter is about conversation.

Sometimes though, that conversation is one sided. Then along comes a twitter guru who says “you are doing it all wrong, you must engage, you must not broadcast, you must do this, you must do that, but most of all you must be on twitter”. Why would anyone want to open the door of engagement to find out that it’s a lie? it’s not engagement, it’s just another stick to beat a business with, another channel for moaning on…

I think twitter is in danger of turning us into a nation of whingers.

I’m falling out of love with Twitter…

Broken HeartA guest post by @saraharrow:

Recently there have been some changes to search engines that mean I am falling out of love with Twitter.

When I signed up to Twitter in 2008, it was just about to go mainstream. It was smaller, less busy and more focused on relationship building and getting to know the person.
Slowly but surely the 'rules' have started to appear, tweet what you eat, don't tweet what you eat, do this, do that, automate this, don't automate that…

A Twitter Interview with Karen Plane of Your Admin

How long have you been on Twitter?

I have been on Twitter now for around 15 months and loving it!

How many people follow you?

At the moment – around 1500 plus

How many people do you follow?

Erm, around 1400 plus.

What made you sign up to Twitter?

I had heard lots of people talking about it on the radio and tv so my initial reason was curiosity, then I realised it could be good for the business too.

How often do you ‘Tweet’?

A few times a day.

The first real Internet election? #ge2010

This was going to be the first real internet election and but for the phenomenal impact of the televised leadership debates it would certainly had an vital PR role for the parties and their candidates.

Had the agenda not been set by the televised debates and subsequent eruption of online and offline coverage and speculation focused on that, what would have happened? In some ways the focus has actually stifled and smothered some of the social media commentary that was eagerly anticipated, which may actually have saved a few red faces.

“It was still really only a retweet, it doesn’t matter”

Those immortal words were uttered by David Prescott, son of John, in response to his dad retweeting a suggestion to click a link, find a Conservative party Google Pay Per Click ad and then click it to remove "50p from the Tories' war chest".

Obviously JP has a fair idea of how social media works and by doing so he was helping empty the Tories coffers. His son down playing it and saying it was "only" a retweet was trying to throw the less social media savvy off the scent, and they were probably reading a report about it in their newspaper. Their audience had no idea the power of a retweet to nearly 18,000 people. Their audience was traditional media readers and they were belittling a tweet. If it means that little, why have a presence at all Mr Prescott?

Guestblog: Echofon Review by Goldilocks without the bears…

Coming late to the iPhone I am just starting to explore what Twitter Apps work best for it.

I started out by downloading my beloved Tweedeck for the iPhone. We did not get on. It's not intuitive to use, in fact I am not sure if I did use it at all for three weeks although I tried too.

Columns wouldn't update and generally a clunky feel that I didnt feel comfortable with.

This saddened me as I love Tweetdeck and it's my app of choice for my PC.

I'm happy to use Increase Sociability.
