How to get more twitter followers

It shouldn’t be the be all and end all of Twitter, but lots of people are focused on getting as many people to follow them as possible.

Personally I would rather have a few people really interested in what I have to share than thousands who are just following me in the hope I will follow them back.

But people like Kevin Rose and Robert Scoble have thousands of followers seriously interested in what they have to say – what’s not to like about that?

The fabulous doshdosh has a post today on how to get more twitter followers.

The Twitter Influence Ratio

Great post from Allan Young with his thoughts on ‘The Twitter Influence Ratio’ or how you can decide whether someone is following based on the number of people they follow and the number of people that follow them.

Here’s an excerpt (accordign to this we have a Twitter Influence Ratio of 1.41 – we’re not sure if that makes us worth following or not!:

Twitter can help you to learn to speed read?

Yes, according to Steveswrong on his Right to be Wrong blog.

I have to say, he has a point – we must be reading quicker, what with scanning all those 140 character messages; even more so if you’re using something such as Twhirl or Tweetdeck and have lots of people to follow.

We haven’t tested his claim that Twitter has helped him to read at 7 words per second, but we’re not going to doubt it!

You can follow Steve on Twitter.

Repost: Twitter faces the gallows by limiting unauthenticated API requests

Great post by TK Kirchner over on Blorge regarding Twitter shooting itself in the foot by limiting API requests.

Rather than rehash it, I’m posting the first paragraph here and you can click over to Blorge to read the rest.

Twitter faces the gallows by limiting unauthenticated API requests Twitter has been trying to stay afloat in the mist of overwhelming traffic for quite some time now. They’ve disabled features, like reply tabs and instant messages, and even tried to reduce authenticated API requests, from unlimited to 70 to 20 and back up to 100. Now, they’re placing a limit on unauthenticated API requests, moving it down to 100 requests per hour per IP address. Developers are already complaining that such move is going to cause serious problems for their businesses and, in effect, cause problems for Twitter.

A million ways to search Twitter, Olympic updates, iPhone apps and more

Morning campers, another round up commences, another day begins.

  • Not strictly about Twitter, but I like this post on Hotels and Social networks from Chris Brogan – Twitter could be great for meeting up with other delegates and guests in a hotel – although it is probably open to misuse….

Twitter: spammers, wine tasting, iPhone and more!

The Twitter news is coming in fast and furiously – here’s our round up of the past few hours:

  • Shamus echos my own sentiments on those twitter spammers – just exactly HOW do they get so many followers? I know some people will have accounts set to auto follow, but even so….
  • Tweet2Win is a service that basically seems to want you to promote it for the chance to win prizes. On first glance it looks predominantly American, and I’m not sure I understand the point of it, but as loads of you have sent me the link I thought I should check it out!

Andrew Grill is using Twitter for business – are you?

Like many people that hear of Twitter, at first Andrew thought of it as a waste of time, and wondered what all the fuss was about.

But, give him his due, he signed up and gave it a go, wanting to (in his words) ‘walk the talk’.

His blog today shows that 6 months on, he’s certainly glad he did!

He says:

Best practice for Twitter – make it work for you

Great article from David Lee King here about Twitter best practices and how to NOT seem like a complete newbie!

A lot of it is plain common sense, but in easy to read bullet points and with clear explanations.

Rather than rewrite the whole thing, I’ll put his basic bullet points below and you can read the full article on his site. He’s taken the time to write it – he deserves the traffic!

Twitter Best Practices:

1. Have a bio.

2. Extra links in your bio.

3. Spell check your bio text.
