So, what do people use Twitter FOR?

Well, according to a report from The Pew Center:

  • 72% of Twitter users say they post updates about their personal life, activities or interests.
  • 62% post work-related updates.
  • 55% use Twitter to share links to news stories.
  • 53% use the service to retweet others’ material.
  • 40% use the service to share photos with others, while 28% use it to share videos.
  • 24% tweet their location.

You can read more about this in Mashable’s coverage of the report.

I (Nikki) have to say that I use Twitter for all of the above activities – how about you?

The anatomy of a Tweet – what do all those symbols mean?

A guest post by @laura_champion

So, you’ve been told that Twitter is a great way of marketing your small business on an even smaller budget… but when you log on it all looks like gibberish. As a relative newbie to Twitter myself, I thought I’d jot down what I’ve learnt so far to help you make the most of this powerful communications channel.

Twitter is a Social Media website, where you ‘follow’ people in order to see their Tweets. You see the Tweets of all the people you follow in a chronological stream, and they will see yours if they follow you. The tricky thing is that a Tweet is restricted to just 140 characters, so a kind of short hand has emerged that helps people to communicate rather a lot, in this very small space.

Useful and Fun Twitter Bots!

A guest post by @annsmarty

Twitter bots are non-human Twitter users (I know it sounds like non-fiction!) that perform some automated action. While there are tons of spammy Twitter accounts (actually, almost one-third of Twitter users are not “real” people or zombies), there are a few really cool and useful ones!

Basically, all Twitter bots can be divided into two large groups:

  • Auto-streaming bots (those that automatically post public Twitter updates based on some criteria. A good example is an RT Twitter bot that collects and streamlines Tweets based on a hashtag or a search term);

Why I love Twitter by a self confessed Twitterholic

I suspect I was asked to write this guest blog because I am a self confessed Twitterholic!  I do spend a lot of time on Twitter, and by the time you read this will probably have surpassed the 30,000 tweet mark, yet I have only been on Twitter for about 18 months.

I come across a lot of people who don’t understand Twitter, and especially don’t realise what it can do for your business.

Hootsuite Pro – why is everyone giving them such a hard time?

I love Hootsuite.

I’m not affiliated, they’re not a client, and I don’t know the guys behind it; but I love it.

With Hootsuite I can:

  • Manage 20+ Twitter accounts
  • Manage 50+ Facebook Business Pages
  • Schedule Tweets and Facebook updates to appear when I (or my client) wants
  • See stats on Tweets – for example, how many people clicked
  • Create lists of people I follow
  • Find new people to follow
  • Keep track of specific searches
  • and more

What would YOU tell your 16 year old self?

Could you imagine going back in time? Could you imagine talking to your 16 year old self and giving them advice?

People on Twitter are doing just that, right now. It’s fascinating.

#tweetyour16yearoldself

As you can see from the snippet here, the advice is fascinating!

@Quennessa gosh, I feel for her. I wonder what the story with that is?

@ISaidDont ‘s RT of @belly187 made me smirk. That can’t be real. Can it?

Hair cuts, diaries and love advice are all things we share with our 16 year old selves.

140 means clarity in communication

140 characters isn’t a lot but it requires clarity in communication or things can get misinterpreted.

The celebrities on Twitter get it right, and gather huge followings. When @Alyssa_Milano tweeted about stockings with ‘follow me’ on the back of them, the company sold 18,000 pairs in two days. Influential? To the stocking retailer most certainly :) I hope they sent her a years supply.

Barack Obama has been praised for his use of social media and it’s use in his political campaigns.

So how come the UK politicians are struggling to communicate using social media tools?

What do you do with your old shoes? #carolschuckouts

Well if you are a celeb on twitter you give them away to your followers…. just take a look at what @CarolVorders is doing

Yes, Carol Vorderman is giving away her size 6 shoe collection via twitter. Her boots as well. I think I saw a mention of clothes too.

After uploading a pic of the shoes or boots she is giving away, she is picking randomly from her replies that have the hashtag and the @reply. Carol would have quite a lot of loyal fans and they are probably very excited (sorry am a size 5, am struggling to get excited over too big shoes).

I’m falling out of love with Twitter…

Broken HeartA guest post by @saraharrow:

Recently there have been some changes to search engines that mean I am falling out of love with Twitter.

When I signed up to Twitter in 2008, it was just about to go mainstream. It was smaller, less busy and more focused on relationship building and getting to know the person.
Slowly but surely the 'rules' have started to appear, tweet what you eat, don't tweet what you eat, do this, do that, automate this, don't automate that…
