[Twitter] Personal or Company Branding?

By Stephen Bray

Lisa Attias, More South Catering, Hertfordshire, U.K.

Lisa Attias

Lisa Attias wondered if she should Tweet under her own name, or in the name of the company in which she is a partner MoreSouth. Concerned to raise the profile of MoreSouth, which is a catering organization specialising in Mediterranean food providing catering throughout Hertfordshire, UK, and beyond.  She wondered if  it perhaps more professional to change her Twitter name from @LisaAttias to MoreSouth. I counseled against such a move.

Her reasoning was that if people looked for MoreSouth on Twitter her name wouldn’t appear. In this she was completely wrong. Simply having the word MoreSouth on her profile page is sufficient for a Twitter search to find Lisa’s personal account.

Twitter: who cares?

Bom dia!Twitter has a reputation for being full of people tweeting mindlessly about what they ate for breakfast or that they are making a cup of tea. It’s true; Twitter is a bit like a jumble sale. You have to rummage through a lot of rubbish in order to find the hidden gems.

So how do you become a desirable Twitter treasure?

Before you start any marketing activity, you need to decide your objective, or most wanted response (MWR).

With your website, the MWR might be to encourage people to contact you by phone or email.

Now we know: Twitter is a good place to sell niche nonfiction books

Once in a while it’s encouraging to see a straight, old-fashioned sales success story, and here is my latest contribution.

Back in the early OOs I wrote a book called “The Horse Lover’s Joke Book.” It took me all of about 3 months in total and I enjoyed every minute of it. The book was published by one of the specialist equestrian imprints and since then it has sold out several times and been reprinted as many times again.

Twitter for small businesses: Make it count

donutA guest post by James Ainsworth of Marketing Donut

Given that social media is a field of marketing still in its infancy, reports are published daily on social media habits. Indeed, the viral growth of social media usage studies, and studies of studies, was recently highlighted in terms more expected of Private Eye than a serious publication like The Economist, which said: “An astonishing amount of time is being wasted on investigating the amount of time being wasted on social networks.”

Launching Twinterviewing – Twinterviews with Tweeters around the world!

I’ve been thinking about it for a while – live Twinterviews with people using Twitter for business, but wasn’t sure how to go about it.

And then it hit me – we’ll do it through a Twitter account – and so Twinterviewing was born.

So how does it work?

Well, once or twice a week, we’ll run a live Twitter interview – by following the Twinterviewer and the Twinterviewee, you’ll be able to follow the thread of the interview, and we’ll be using hashtags so that you can see the whole thing later on. We’ll probably also archive the interviews here on Business on Twitter.

The power of the Retweet – how Stephen Fry helped me illustrate a point

One of the things I cover in the TweetMentor course, and one of the most overlooked things on Twitter (in my opinion) is the power of the Retweet.

The Retweet is an all round good thing in so many ways – I’m not going to go into them all here, but just point you to Retweetist before giving you an example.

Last night I published a short blog about the fact that Twitter had banned @TweepMe and why I agreed. It was one of many such blogs out there. Don’t tell anyone, but it wasn’t even the best….

Free Twitter Checklist!

I don’t often use this blog to promote my own ‘stuff’ so I hope you’ll all forgive me this one time!

I’ve put together a Twitter Checklist of 40 things I think you should be looking at if you’re serious about promoting your business on Twitter.

I’m giving it to you for free – however there is a bit of a catch. To get it free you have to read about a new service I’m promoting – TweetMentor.

You can find out more and get your free Twitter for business checklist here

21 Ways to Market Your Business on Twitter

Great post from webcommunityforum with more ideas on promoting your business on Twitter. Granted, a lot of these have been covered elsewhere, but I’m a great believer in old info packaged in new ways can give new ideas.

Here are the first 5 on the webcommunityforum list – you can read the rest here –>

# Craft an appropriate Twitter Policy, and encourage your employees to sign up for accounts on Twitter.
# As the owner of your business, register your @companyname and use it for all your tweets.
# Use Twitter Search to find and respond to tweets about your products or your brand.
# Ask for feedback on your products and then follow up with the responses you get.
# Go to any nearby tweetups you can find.

I'm happy to use Increase Sociability.
