Twitter: Is It Time To Shoot The Messenger?

DAVOS/SWITZERLAND, 29JAN10 - David Cameron, Le...

At a speech in Kuwait this February British Prime Minister David Cameron stated:

‘The Internet and social media’ is a powerful tool in the hands of citizens, not a means of repression. It belongs to the people who’ve had enough of corruption, of having to make do with what they’re given, of having to settle for second best.” Perhaps this is what bothers him?

No matter, in doing so he echoed some of the sentiments I’ve made here in some earlier posts. The Internet is a great leveller and no part more so than Social Media. Since it’s inception we’ve seen Twitter become much more than a place where in 140 characters one can pitch the latest offer to a gullible audience.

Who said you cannot get Business from Twitter, A guest blog from Mark Shaw

I have always stated that Twitter is the greatest lead generation and marketing tool ever invented but convincing others of that fact is very difficult. I decided the best way to convince people was to show them and to this end I created my dedicated @msrfr twitter account which stands for Mark Shaw’s request for recommendations.

@visua1print: @msrfr I have just confirmed a nice order from a new client in Ireland via your service. Deserves a shout out..See it does work

Automating Twitter: Beware of the Dangers – A guest post by Paul Green

Being a bit of a geek, I thought it would be great to use technology to help generate tweets to my followers. So, having checked out the likes of SocialOomph and Futuretweets – I thought great, this is right up my street to manage a 3 month campaign to automate various tweets on articles, case studies, newsletters, blogs and various other business related links. (Hmm – note to self, it’s sounding ‘spammy’ as I’m writing this).

So being fairly new to the use of social media for business, here’s me thinking I would become a trending phenomenon over night. Err…unfortunately not the case.

How Far Should You Trust Twitter?

In Nothing We Trust

It seems like years since I wrote about Professor Scott Lucas using Twitter to collect and disseminate information about the world of international relations using Twitter. It was January.

The reason it seems so far back, no doubt, is that since posting the article the areas to which Lucas focuses most of his energy have been plunged into turmoil with Twitter now playing the part of a weapon of revolutionary force.

People in Egypt, Libya and Syria, for example have used both Facebook and Twitter to organise demonstrations and in the case of Libya this has escalated into a civil war.

How Quora used Twitter to succeed

Quora on FlipBoard

Twitter has long been the breeding ground for launching potential viral content. The ability to retweet links easily and quickly means trending topics often receive millions of page visits. Justin Bieber would probably vouch for that. But one of the best examples of the influence Twitter can have on a business is the recent explosion of Quora.

Twitter: Faster Than CNN?

It’s half past six on a cold morning in Birmingham U.K. Professor Scott Lucas from the Department of  American Studies at Birmingham University is already listening to the sonar like ping of Tweetdeck.

Lucas is, in addition to being a busy department head, and the author of a number of books and articles on U.S. Foreign Policy. He is also the Editor in Chief of ‘EA Worldview’, a blog that is regarded as seriously as any printed political journal.

Woo hoo! When I had nearly finished my book, “French Nouns: Masculine or Feminine?” I was really pleased with myself. However, it slowly dawned on me that writing the book was all very well, but how was I going to tell people about it? No website, no skills to design one and no money to pay someone else to do it….

Using Social Media to Promote Your Brand Image

Social Media has become one of the aspects in which every company begins to investigate when they are looking to ramp up their online marketing efforts. Particularly in the past couple of years, we are constantly advised that using FaceBook and Twitter to increase our presence and connect with our customers is paramount to our success. So how useful and powerful are these elements really?

IS TWITTER A WHOLE LOT OF TWOSH? – A guest post by Ida Horner

I certainly don’t think so but I’ve listened my way into several conversations of folk that think it is. Those conversations tend to go like this

“What is the point of twitter, why would I want to know what someone had for breakfast/lunch, I don’t get it and it must be for sad people with nothing better to do”

I am often tempted to interject and “educate” such folk about the joys of twitter but have resisted the urge thus far.

So why do I disagree with the naysayers?

I'm happy to use Increase Sociability.
