[Twitter] Personal or Company Branding?

By Stephen Bray

Lisa Attias

Lisa Attias wondered if she should Tweet under her own name, or in the name of the company in which she is a partner MoreSouth. Concerned to raise the profile of MoreSouth, which is a catering organization specialising in Mediterranean food providing catering throughout Hertfordshire, UK, and beyond.  She wondered if  it perhaps more professional to change her Twitter name from @LisaAttias to MoreSouth. I counseled against such a move.

Her reasoning was that if people looked for MoreSouth on Twitter her name wouldn’t appear. In this she was completely wrong. Simply having the word MoreSouth on her profile page is sufficient for a Twitter search to find Lisa’s personal account.

Three reasons to consider Twitter for ‘reputation amplification’

by René Power, The Marketing Assassin

Twitter is without doubt a very useful business tool. But it can also be incredibly distracting and time wasting if not used correctly. Good use of Twitter relies on ordered use of other tools, relevant targeted content, a structured mind and a steady temperament to work effectively.

I wrote my inaugural piece for this blog offering seven interchangeable ways of using Twitter for business back in March and think this planned approach will save you from the sorts of PR disasters that have afflicted a wealth of businesspeople and business brands in recent months. (Just Google ‘Twitter faux pas’ to uncover a long list).

Do you know what you want to get out of Twitter?

Ask yourself a question: When does ‘just dipping your toe’ work in any walk of life? The answer is rarely.

So, why do so many people dip their toe when using Twitter for the first time? And are you one of them?

If you are, you’re about to waste a lot of time and effort and will be dissatisfied with what happens as a result. Take a step back and consider the following.

How NOT to win friends and influence people on twitter

Over the past few months I have noticed some over eager people, very often professionals, new to twitter making credibility damaging mistakes. So, I thought I would highlight some of these errors and explain why they are a turn off to people on twitter:

1. Hash tag spam

How should I mix the personal and professional on Twitter?

I regularly give talks for entrepreneurial businesses on how to make their marketing pay. Top of my list for most is to try social media as part of their marketing toolkit. And within that, I almost always recommend Twitter. Particularly if the business in question is one where authentic one-to-one relationships count.

What made you sign up to Twitter?

I attended a workshop by Anna Farmery of The Engaging Brand at the WiRE Conference last month and it was clear from what she talked about that any business worth it’s salt should have a presence on Twitter if only to increase their awareness of what everybody else is doing in business. Plus of course the opportunity to share useful information and raise awareness of their business.

What made you sign up to Twitter?

To be honest , it was the “me too” syndrome.  Lots of people in my space of online marketing were banging on about it so I thought it was a good way to find out what my peers were up to.  It also looked fairly painless and easy to do.

1 Golden Rule of Twitter Marketing

Great article from Aaron brezell of Technosailor this morning pointing out what so many are missing out on when using Twitter for business. Be sure to read the full article but the basic premise, in his words is:
If I had to detail a Twitter Golden Rule it would:

Tweet about others at least as much as you Tweet about yourself.

Think about it Twitterpeeps, think about it….

Andrew Grill is using Twitter for business – are you?

Like many people that hear of Twitter, at first Andrew thought of it as a waste of time, and wondered what all the fuss was about.

But, give him his due, he signed up and gave it a go, wanting to (in his words) ‘walk the talk’.

His blog today shows that 6 months on, he’s certainly glad he did!

He says:

I'm happy to use Increase Sociability.
